Silent Auction

For the Silent Auction we are opening these items to people who cannot attend the event and therefore maximising the money for ASSERT. To submit a bid please download and complete the Silent Bid Form, Complete it and return it by either post or email. All bids will be confirmed by phone and all internet bids must be received before 5pm on Wednesday 26th August. For those of you not wanting to be outbid by attendees of the event can request and update call on the night if outbid. All Auction bidding will end at 10.15pm on Thursday 27th August.

Payment for successful bids must be received within 7 days of the end of the auction and any delivery charges will be added to the final cost.

The CD

Over the past 14 months, we have been working hard on putting together a compilation of songs taken from the movies which will compliment the event in Glasgow on 27th August 2009. Friends and family have come together (sober and away from the Karaoke machine) to sing their hearts out on this compilation CD. We are also lucky enough to have worked with some very talented people, none more so than Marty Joe Rogan, a Singer Songwriter from Milton of Campsie in Glasgow. Marty Joe wrote and recorded Sam’s Song especially for this CD and for Angels without Voices. Marty Joe took the time to research Angelman Syndrome and has come up with amazing and very emotional lyrics and coupled it with a stunning melody for an exceptional song. A sample of this song can be heard here however to indulge yourself in the Full Length version you will have to purchase the CD.

The Book

Just Like You is a book aimed at young children to help them understand that disabilities, particularly Angelman Syndrome, do not make people any different. The book follows a young boy, questioning the things in life that “make a person special” he explains that like all children he has dreams and feelings , and that sometimes he can’t always express them.

This bright, colourful book has been kindly written, illustrated and printed at no cost to Angels without Voices in order to support their fundraising efforts for ASSERT. This means that 100% of the money raised from the sale of this book will go to helping the hundreds of families influenced by AS in the UK.

Our deepest thanks go to Guy Fee, Sheena McMurtrie, 999 Design Glasgow Office and MLG Glasgow for all the great work in helping make this book a reality and something that many families will cherish in their children’s book collection.

Information On Angelman Syndrome

Angelman Syndrome (AS) is a rare genetic condition first identified in the mid 1960’s by a British doctor called Harry Angelman, from whom it also gained its name. AS affects parts of the nervous system, particularly the brain. The condition affects both boys and girls.

AS has an estimated incidence of approximately 1 in 20,000. As testing continues to improve, new cases are being identified all of the time and older children and young adults are now being diagnosed retrospectively.

AS can also be caused by a number of genetic mutations and genetic imprinting defects. In most cases it is spontaneous, with no hereditary factor. People with AS have a normal life expectancy.

A person with the condition, normally diagnosed around the ages of 2-3 typically exhibits global development delay, feeding problems, unusual jerky limb movement, a lack of sleep, poor sleep patterns, along with a profound severe learning and physical difficulties. However they usually have a happy demeanor, are prone to easy laughter, and are very sociable and loving.

Many also have childhood epilepsy and/or scoliosis.
Many will learn to walk but with AS nothing is guaranteed
A person with AS will require lifelong care

The characteristics used for diagnostic criteria are listed below:
Consistent (100%)

Developmental delay, functionally severe
Speech impairment, no or minimal use of words, receptive and non-verbal communication skills higher than verbal ones
Movement or balance disorder, usually ataxia of gait and/or tremulous movement of limbs
Behavioural uniqueness: any combination of frequent laughter/smiling; apparent happy demeanour; easily excitable personality, often with hand flapping movements; hypermotoric behaviour; short attention span

ASSERT Trustee’s are all relatives of children with Angelman Syndrome. We have set ourselves the objective’s below

To produce a regular newsletter
To provide an information pack for doctors to give to families of those newly diagnosed with AS;
To maintain a 24 hour, seven day a week telephone support line;
To forge links with similar AS organisations overseas;
To hold regional meetings in different locations throughout the year;
To establish a national register of families indicating those willing to be a point of contact for families of those newly diagnosed with AS;
To fund research into Angelman Syndrome;
To raise public awareness of Angelman Syndrome by means of articles for journals and magazines.

All monies raised from this event will go to ASSERT to help them continue to provide the essential services offered freely to families affected by Angelman Syndrome.

ASSERT are a registered charity run by families for families directly affected by the condition, and rely solely on donations and sponsored fundraising.

It costs nothing for families to join ASSERT and to date they have around 500 UK families registered as members.

A Night At The Movies

Thursday 27th August 2009 saw the inaugural fundraising event for Angels without Voices in aid of ASSERT (Angel man Syndrome Support Education and Research Trust). The Red Carpet event saw 150 guests don their Glad rags and descend on Glasgow’s Premier Private Members Club 29 for a mix of live music, Dancing Girls and Silent Auction.

Guests were welcomed with a Champagne reception followed by a choice of sumptuous cocktails. With photographers on hand to take everyone’s picture on arrival in front of a specially commissioned Oscar Backdrop.

The silent auction featured some fantastic and exclusive items including signed footballs from Rangers FC, Celtic FC and Manchester United FC, Signed Gold Discs of Casino, Top Gun & Grease and an Exquisite Vera Wang Niki Bag donated by Kate Moss.

All the generous donations raised a great deal of interest and went a long way in the success of the event and the wonderful amount we raised. The raffle included items such as an Xbox 360, Limited Edition BAFTA Placemats, Glengoyne Distillery Master Blending Session and a Cut and Colour at Saks St Vincent Street and raised £1200 alone.

The night was kicked off with a short video presentation highlighting the amazing work and support ASSERT offer and featured the real stars of the night – the Angels:

Graced by the presence of Cara Kennedy, Fashion Writer for Scotland’s Premier Glossy “No1 Magazine” Cara kindly judged and presented prizes for Best Dressed, Male, Female and Couple with prizes donated by Bedlam Paintball, Hilton Glasgow Grosvenor, Guys Restaurant, Kroma Hair, Rainbow Room Stirling & Jemma Kidd Make-up School.

Best Dressed Couple: Alice Saula & David Baird

The Live entertainment began with an astounding performance from the dance troupe Filthy Gorgeous with their own Cell Block Tango from the Musical Chicago and throughout the night guests were treated to the vocal styling’s of Sam Simmons, Scott Cameron and Marty-Joe Rogan who are all featured on the Music from the Movies CD and all finished off by another outstanding Hip Hop performance from Filthy Gorgeous.

A Night At The Movies was a resounding success for the first event of it’s kind for ASSERT. A huge thank you to all that contributed to the night. Angels without Voices hope to continue these events for ASSERT on a Bi-annual basis.
